Case study · AI in operations

A bike manufacturer leaves NetSuite and hands the busywork to AI agents

Spot Bikes builds mountain and gravel bikes to order in Golden, Colorado, and sells direct to riders. I joined as an assembler and ended up running purchasing, business systems and IT.

what changed

  • Planned the move off NetSuite and migrated inventory, bills of materials, orders and purchase orders to Katana MRP and QuickBooks Online, saving thousands of dollars a month
  • Built bill-of-materials tools for bikes with many build options
  • AI agents handle daily order processing, turn supplier PDFs into purchase orders and receipts, and reconcile B2B orders across supplier systems
  • Rebuilt spotbikes.com on Shopify with a bike customizer, replacing paid apps
  • Turned a suspension setup spreadsheet into a web and mobile app for riders

how the AI stays safe

Every system the agents touch goes through a typed client I built, which handles retries and rate limits for them. Each write has two steps: the agent previews the change, and it's applied only after a check.

The Katana client and MCP server are open source.
